Happy Saturday, North East Ohio! I have switched gears here on NEO Music Scene and I now bring you Sarah’s Saturday Picks. Each week I will present you with my top tracks at the moment—some newly released and some I have newly discovered—and I hope to be an inspiration to your current playlists. I will focus mainly on my favorite genres: Alternative, Indie, Folk, Acoustic, Pop, and Rap.
While my calendar is sticking to the story that it is still springtime, this Cleveland heat is telling me otherwise. This week, and continuing in the weeks to follow, I am focusing on all of my favorite songs on my summer playlist right now.
Give Yourself a Try // The 1975
FINALLY. Finally. The 1975 has risen with the release of Give Yourself a Try. Along with this single release from one of my all-time favorite groups, they have announced two, yes, two upcoming albums to be released in October of this year and then may of 2019. Give Yourself a Try is absolutely electrifying and shows strong growth from their last album.
Saltwater // Geowulf
Two childhood friends, Toma and Star, come together to create the light and summery sounds of Geowulf. I could not think of a more quintessential song to listen to at the beach if I wanted to. This trance-inducing track takes you on a quick vacation with its slow, island beat and airy vocals; the title alone inspires sandy, beachy thoughts.
Young Blood // Noah Kahan
One of my favorite up and comers, Noah Kahan, has a tone to his voice that I cannot relate to any other artist today, but lyrics and a style similar to many of my current favorites . He adds a very distinct whimsy to each new song, and with 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify, he is the most popular young artist you have not heard of yet.
Best Friend // Rex Orange County
Rex Orange County was brought to my attention recently, and I just cannot get enough of his quirky sound ever since. Best Friend is the latest hit from the London musician whose off-stage name is Alex O’Connor. Add this
New Light // John Mayer
Mr. John Mayer has blessed us with his Grammy award winning music for almost two decades now, and there is just no stopping him. Latest single, released this week, New Light, is the most recent earworm to infect myself and many others. In this case however, it is not the song getting all of the attention in the press, it is the music video that goes along with it. Filmed in a small studio meant for shooting Bat Mitzvah videos—with just about the smallest budget ever—Mayer explained in a tweet that his crew could not decide on a concept or location for the video, so he took matters into his own hands, filming the simple video on his own in under an hour.
I cannot reveal the hundreds of perfect summer jams all in one go, so for now, add these five singles to your “Summer 2018” playlist. Have a beautiful rest of your weekend, NEO. Go Cavs!
