Americana band, JD & the Straight Shot have recently released their 5th album Ballyhoo!  There is even a Cleveland connection to this band as lead singer/guitarist JD is none other than Jim Dolan, nephew of Cleveland Indians owner Larry Dolan.  Other members of the band include Marc Copley (guitars/vocals) and Bryan House (bass).  They are currently on tour supporting Jewel.

The band decided to take an all acoustic approach on this new record, and this approach has paid off.  This album harkens back to a time before there was rock and roll.  Traditional acoustic instruments; guitars, bass, violin and various percussion instruments give this album a fresh feel.

The opening song “Empty” features a nice slide guitar with a bluesy beat.

The next track “Better Find a Church” is easily the best song on the album.  This catchy duet should get the band some airtime on the radio.

The surprise on the album is a cover of Spirit’s “Nature’s Way.”  The band does a very nice job of updating a forgotten classic from the ‘70s.

The 11 song LP ends with the tender “I Will See You Again.”

JD & the Straight Shot’s Ballyhoo! is a refreshing record that gets back to the roots of great American music.  In the age of “bro-country” and auto-tune vocals, it’s nice to know that there are some artists out there who still care about their craft.
